Yuck! Bad service combined with over fried food and probably frozen bags of mixed veggies in lukewarm water (that's what they call mixed vegetable curry). This place doesn't hold a candle to Bombay House. It's only redeeming quality is its clean and the garden salad was fresh. To be fair the dressing for that was very good. We won't be back

Great food and excellent service. Try the chicken tikka masala and tandoori chicken. All entires comes with naan and rice which is very rare in any Indian restaurant. I think The Kathmandu restaurant only gives naan and rice with the entries. Mango lassi was the best drink too. Try the lunch buffet too which is really really good with just $11.85. I am a regular costumer here and will be always regular. The Kathmandu rocks..

Definitely my favorite place to grab Chicken tikka Masala in the valley. It's so creamy and the spice level is perfect. I usually get a 4 out of 6 spice level (medium +). The naan is always super hot and fresh and rice is always cooked to perfection. This is my go to spot when craving Indian type cuisine. They also have an awesome lunch buffet so I like doing brunch here on the weekends.

Never go on the weekend the service was horrible! Waited an hour for a chicken curry!

I have been here several times and have found it to be 'hit-or-miss'. Sometimes the food is average and others times it hasn't been good at all. Its never been great. They tend to burn their Roti...which ruins it for me. I would NOT recommend their lunch buffet. It always looks and tastes old. As if its left over from the day, or two, before. After the last buffet we went to I decided we would not be returning because it was bad. There are plenty of other good indian food restaurants in Salt Lake. But if you have to eat here I would say to order off the menu. The food will take an hour to come out to your table, but the quality is better than their old buffet curry.

  • Minx K.

This one has totally dropped its standards. Not only does the food taste awful I will be glad if I don't fall sick of the stale food laid out for the buffet.

Being heathens from the west, we hadn't considered that getting food on a Sunday in SLC might be a bit tricky. We were happy that this spot was open - especially after several days of road trip food - we needed something a bit more diverse. No buffet on Sunday, but that was fine for us since we usually don't go the buffet route. Food was great (very pleased that rice was included with entrees) and portions were sizable. Downers would be the repeat musak track for "My heart will go on" that played for about an hour straight & having to constantly flag someone down for water refills. Overall good though!

  • Christine F.

Second time I've been to this fab place. Their food is great--some of the best Indian cuisine I've had in SLC. I would definitely go back and would definitely recommend.

This restaurant wouldn't be able to survive in East Coast. I don't know how this restaurant has 4.5 star on yelp but in Boston, it would be around 2 star. The curry was extremely bland and the only flavor you can taste is just generic curry powder, hot chili and ginger. The consistency is also thick and dry. The incident that led me to write a review on this place is how the waiter threw a fork and a spoon on the table. It even made a cling sound on the table... I've never seen any waiter do that in my life! It was extremely unprofessional and demeaning. I hope the owner educates their employees with some basic customer service first.

    (1)
  • Eric B.

Pros: big menu, great food, entrees come with both rice and naan (awesome!). They also have nepalese items which are similar but a little unique. Cons: Pricey. $15-$18 for most entrees which is pretty high for an indian restaurant. Can be partially attributed to including rice and naan. Also, the spiciness is VERY inconsistent. I've order three different items at a spiciness of "5" with the first two times being not spicy at all and the third time finally being decently spicy. Give the nepalese menu items a try.

    (4)
  • Anthony T.

I've been here a few times and I never seem to have any consistency. They have a decent lunch buffet and underwhelming dinner service. The food is better than some of the Indian places in Salt Lake, but there are much better options like Taste of Punjab or Bombay House.

  • Miz V.

I ordered take out, as this is close to home...I ordered chicken curry. Hubby opted for the garlic curry lamb. Mine was better than his..hahaha...the man who took my order was pleasant and to the point. My husband who picked up the food said inside was very clean and had good atmosphere...he felt way under dressed...bit we were just getting it to go...maybe next time we will eat "in house" lol.

  • Benjamin T.

Absolutely delicious! The variety is astounding with an even better taste! Their curries are wonderful, and the price is not bad at all! Do order a butter chicken with banana lassi, you won't regret it!

It looks like a strip mall Indian restaurant, right? With strip mall Indian food, and faux Indian decor, right? Wrong! Despite being situated in the middle of a parking lot, and surrounded by a GNC, McDonald's, a hair salon, and a grocery store, Kathmandu is a surprising, refreshing, and spicy treat. The menu includes Indian and Nepali cuisine: Some things that I'd heard of (Thali, Paneer, Masala, Tandori), some unique twists on standard fare (multiple "chillis", stuffed naan, and variety of soups), and some stuff I'd never heard of before (Jwanu and Methi cooked meats, goat everything...). While I admit I am a Nepalese food newb, I was surprised by the rich, deep and spicy flavors. The wife was thrilled that they have a huge vegetarian menu, not as an afterthought or dishes just made without the meat, but a good wide variety. I'm on a tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich kick, and I can't wait to go back and try their take on tomato soup and stuffed cheese naan! I hear that lots of people like to come for lunch buffet, but I'd suggest a nighttime, cooked-to-order, affordable meal. I know we'll be coming back again and again.

This is a great restaurant with very delicious food. I especially loved the chicken momo and Tandoori chicken. The buffet was also very delicious and there was a lot of selection for both vegans and meatlovers.

  • Max K.

Man oh man! Boy oh boy! This place is one of my favorite Indian/Nepalese joints around. I'm stuck on the butter chicken curry spice level 5 and I can't get away. It's just the richest, creamiest, tangiest, yummiest dish ever. Seriously, a great establishment. Awesome service. Can't say enough good things about this spot. I'll fight anybody who says otherwise. Seriously, you wanna go?

  • Dane N.

Food was good, atmosphere was good too. I'll try it again, but wasn't necessarily blown away. I will say everything seemed super authentic. I'd recommend it for sure, but couldn't quite justify 5 stars.

  • Sri R.

This review is for the lunch buffet. Hmm, where do I start. On a road trip and craving for some good indian / Nepali food, I found this 4.5 starrer on yelp. As much as I was prepared for average food, it was worse than that. The only veggie appetizer was pakora, which was ok. Entrees were all bland, flavorless and meh. Naan was hard n stale, while the bhatura was far from authentic. I filled my tummy with only garbanzo salad, coz that seemed to me like the only decent option. Jamun was too sweet n rubber like consistency and the rice was totally dry. All in all, bad food. Not aunthentic at all.

    (2)
  • Jamie G.

Had the chicken coconut korma and it was so delicious! Mango lassi wasn't cold enough for me. Good naan. Going to go back and try the buffet!

    (4)
  • Shannon R.

Their food taste bland and stale, will never ever come back. Biggest waste of money. I could barely stomach it. And I love Indian food, but this place, is terrible.

    (1)
  • Tins Y.

Came in for the lunch buffet, because I don't really know how to order Indian dishes, so buffet is perfect for people like me. I really love the lamb, it was so tender that the meat just fell off the bone when you pick it up. The grilled chicken was full of flavor. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the desserts, ginger pieces in rice pudding is just not my thing.

    (4)
  • Ethel C.

I love coming to Kathmandu whenever I'm in Salt Lake City. Papadam is what I order every time for appetizer. Try the Nepalese dishes. They are all great food choices. Service is a little slow, but the ambiance makes you feel like you are in Nepal. Great experience and a must try restaurant.

  • Kayleigh R.

I went here on a recommendation and I was glad I tried it. The building has big comfy booths and fun mood setting decor. The wait was a little long but worth it. I had the chicken tikka masala. The chicken was moist, the heat was perfect, best thing we ordered. My husband had the lamb vindaloo which he said was great but not quite as spicy as he'd like. The naan was nothing spectacular. I am a rice lover and it didn't disappoint here. I highly recommend!

  • Steven C.

Great food, slow very slow service! This place is a laid back as one could imagine. I'm told it's the Nepalese way to be excruciatingly slow. People in a hurry never tend to have the time to be very courteous. Turns out that's another Nepalese trait. It has an authentic feel, not that I would have any clue what is or is not authentic when it comes to Nepal. However in my imagination I tend to think the service and food would be similar. We ordered a bottle of wine. Our waiter didn't seem to know the first thing about opening it or serving it. But it made it to the table and we had glasses to drink it from so that's good enough for me. I ordered off the Indian side of the menu and while my butter chicken was unbelievably good it was a light almost almond color that I would have never thought possible for the dish and extremely creamy. I was uncertain about it at first however the nan that came with it was delicious and I was starving from a very full day of skiing. As the wine and the meal progressed my hangryness also subsided and I found myself enjoying the butter chicken like I'd never tasted it before. It really was one of the best indian dishes I've ever had and if flights back to Utah were a bit cheaper I'd be headed there now for a 2nd helping. Portion sizes were spot on. Nan was awesome Samosa's were very good.

Granted we came here closer to closing time so that may have been annoying for them but the restaurant was virtually dead there were at least 8 employees sitting at a table eating together. The food was just okay. I probably wont be back here again. However i've eaten at their other location (for lunch) and it's always been really really good.

    (3)
  • George L.

I've been here three times now so I should probably write a review. It's been great each time I've gone. I've only been for dinner so I can't comment on the lunch service or menu. The food is always so well prepared and the staff is always friendly. I never regret a penny or minute spent there.

    (5)
  • Rohit B.

Feels so much like home-cooked indian food. We ordered the royu saag and it was tasty. The roti was fresh and soft. The mango kulfi was delicious too ! I hope they open a branch in so cal.

This was the worst service I have had for the past year. Ordered nann basket and the tikka masala, kukhura chicken. Waited an hour to get food my mother wanted to storm out and leave they kept on telling us 2 more minutes. After waiting an hour and a half the nann was cold and then food finally came. We had eaten so much nann we weren't hungry. I was very disappointed with the service. One server said he was waiting for us to finish our nann basket before he brought the food...you eat your nann with the food always!!! I don't know what he was thinking. Before our food came out I saw a massive box of food for a pickup that was given to a woman. The other man said sorry for the wait we had a takeout... You do not make customers who have ordered 2 dishes wait for an hour and a half. Also the tikka masala was curdling. Terrible service. Even if the food was amazing I would not go back because they do not now how to treat customers.

  • Andrea N.

Yum. Fluffiest naan I've ever had. Very rich food--lots of coconut cream. The buffet is delightful; I can't do it anymore because I can't control myself. I've heard the owner is very knowledgeable/helpful about vegan stuff.

  • H Y.

We had the buffet for the first time and it was pretty tasty. There were many vegetarian options and three chicken dishes. My toddler loves it. He ate tandoori chicken, noodles, and some potato. The service was great and it is a family friendly place. Only complaint was that they didn't have meat options other than chicken.

    (4)
  • Tessa W.

My friend and I love the vegetable pakora. It comes with a few different tasty sauces. I would definitely recommend giving it a try. I also really like that you can select your level of spiciness on a level of 1-10. It really allows for great customization of your dish. The atmosphere is welcoming and I've always had friendly and quick service.

I am so excited to have this near my job!! This Kathmandu has a wonderful lunch buffet. Tons of options, everything is delicious. I was especially happy that they clearly mark dishes containing nuts. this restaurant is also vegan as gluten free friendly.

  • Janelle S.

Being new to warm up to Indian / Nepali food, I wanted to try The Kathmandu's lunch buffet. It didn't dissapoint! I went right at 11:30 a.m. so everything would be fresh and "first out". So good. Everything tasted very fresh and flavorful. Several hot/spicy dishes, which I like - but for weaker tastebuds, all the really hot dishes were labeled. Just passing through, I was in no hurry. Overheard several fellow patrons of Indian descent with friends of obviously European background introducing different dishes and how good this place is. I take that as a good sign! A pitcher of water left at my table, which I appreciated. Friendly staff eager to ensure a positive dining experience. For a $10.95 lunch buffet, I'd for sure recommend The Kathmandu.

  • Lyn M.

I'm never disappointed here. I love the variety of Vegan and gluten free options. Great quality of food, well balanced of spices in each dish. They recently added a Vegan flat bread taste very good although it's not gluten free. This place can really give you the kicks! If you want it hot they will make it HOT! Service is always up and down some days it is great they are attentive and some are not so great.

Overall amazing experience! Came here with my husband & mom per the Yelp reviews & was not led astray!! We started with the veggie samoas & they were really good - a little different crusted flake & spice than what we're used to, but still nice. We ordered a Napali vegan pumpkin meal, curried goat, and a Napali vegan fried potato balls meal (cannot remember the exact names). And it was all amazing!! The texture & flavor were perfectly matched and wow'd us! We did order soy mango smoothies and they were more like a thick soup, compared to what we're used to, but we' still good. As far as service, they were very attentive. I overheard a waiter ask if the people behind us if this was they're first visit & Gave them recommendations. I'd take someone here for their first or 100th Indian experience!! Excellent!

  • Ella T.

Sauce of tikka masala was ok but the chicken they used was frozen. Chicken was tough. Lamb saag was just ok. Cheese Naan is like quesadilla! They used cheddar cheese! Nothing really memorable with this restaurant. We are from WA state and we've tried BoMbay Grill! Better try that restaurant instead. It's the bomb!

  • Angelia Y.

Decorations in the store is very relaxing, and traditional Indian/Nepalese style, we had the lunch buffet. Food selections are limited compared to regular buffet restaurant but have about 20 dishes total and taste so good. The price is around 10$ per person which I think is more than reasonable. The store environment is clean and neat. They have very friendly service.

  • Albert H.

Grocery store parking lot location was a little uninspiring but once inside the mood was set just right for the meal. We had pleasant mannered staff that were very attentive. We decided against the lunch buffet on a quiet afternoon because there weren't as many familiar dishes as we would like, and we were simply not in the mood for trying new things on that particular day. Sometimes you just want a very good meal of something you know you'll like. Our food did not disappoint. Only hiccup was that the server tried repeatedly to talk us out of our orders. I hate to infer, but it was as if they only wanted to make entrees that were compatible with the curry sauces already made for the buffet or something along those lines. Sorry but if you indicate that the full menu is available then it is, no debate required. Their spice/heat level has some complexity to it, so make sure to get the full details. There's a "Kathmandu hot" which is hotter than the various "extra hot" requests. Ours was milder than we had anticipated, by a notable margin.

Great Indian food close to downtown salt lake. The service is a bit slow but I've never been disappointed. The buffet is pretty good but I usually order from the menu. The naan is included with the entree which is nice since other restaurants seem to price it separately. Overall, a great place for good Indian food.

  • Smp P.

I am unsure where to start, but let's start with the food. I had high expectations based on various reviews but the food is mediocre at best. The quality and taste were not upheld and food taste can definitely improved by adding more flavor and authenticity. Service was excellent though!

  • Juliet C.

Hands down one of the best places for Indian in the area. I am in love with their lunch buffet especially because they often have the bengan bharta (sp?) which is their eggplant curry. Just writing about it now makes me want some. AND it's the only place I've seen that serves this fried naan. Omg it's so good. The holladay location is good too, but I like this location better

    (4)
  • Vida A.

Only have been for lunch buffet. Its very fresh and tasty. I love the spice level of the food. Space is very clean and nice. I prefer this place because they have parking as opposed to the places downtown. Service is nice.

Our first time here, great food, great atmosphere, lunch buffet was great! The rice pudding was a favorite! $10 was a great value for lunch.

  • Michelle C.

Inexpensive, decent indian food. Warning though. I ordered a 3 out of 7 on the heat scale and I couldn't eat my food. The food is a bit too greasy. But, they have good potential.

  • J. N.

I went on an epic journey today to the Kathmandu lunch buffet. It was enlightening and only $10.95. Cheaper than a flight to Nepal and minimal risk of typhoid. Some of the buffet offerings aren't of the same dinner-hour quality, though, such as the naan, which is fluffy and delicate when ordered off the menu and so dense and chewy at the end of the buffet line. That's expected of a lunch-time buffet. What I didn't expect was my ability to put away four plates of food. Om nom nom.

    (5)
  • Christian R.

This place is extremely friendly and consistent. Their buffet offers a variety of options for those on special diets. They list all of the ingredients so I feel safe for my vegan diet. The food is always on par and is never a disappointment. This is my favorite Indian place in salt lake and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in eating for a reasonable price.

  • Mary V.

HORRIBLE service. Really NO service; we had to ask for everything. Table next to us was seated after us, ate, paid, & left before we got our food. Didn't like most of the food. Extra greasy fried appetizers, disgusting. Something that seemed like fried sawdust was I think chickpeas? Maybe you have to know what to order here?

    (2)
  • J S.

By far the best Indian food I've ever had!!!

  • Jeff C.

I went with two others and the portions were large and tasty. The service was speedy and kind. I can't say enough about this place because it seems like it wasn't very busy for a Saturday night. It's well worth visiting here as you won't be disappointed.

    (5)
  • Margrit S.

The soups are good. The combination appetizer is great. I should stop there but I never do. Try the garlic naan! My only complaint is that I always eat too much because it's so good!

    (5)
  • Sarah Ann M.

The food was so so good. We had great service. The food was great and the naan that came with the meals was wonderful. Be careful ordering...we ordered a 3 and it was pretty spicy! I recommend the butter chicken.

A quick date night coupled with the desire to try someplace new led us to Kathmandu. We were seated very promptly, even on a busy Saturday night. But we were seated next to the lunch buffet serving area, which distracted from the aesthetics the restaurant might have offered. When we were ready to order, I asked the server about the difference between two items, which somehow turned into the server making my decision for me. Still not sure how that happened. We started with the veggie appetizer sampler. Nothing sticks out in my mind about what was on the plate, which says to me that everything was just average and unremarkable. My server chose the vegetable kofta for me, which was an interesting dish of fried vegetable balls in a coconut sauce with raisins and nuts. It was definitely flavorful, only I had no desire to try the leftovers the next day. The basmati rice was completely bland while the spicy tea was so overpowering I couldn't have more than a sip. Hubby ordered the Kathmandu Non-veg Thali. At over $21 this selection was a splurge, but until we looked back at the menu he couldn't remember what it consisted of. The best thing we were served was the naan. It was fluffier and more substantive than other Indian restaurants. I'm not willing to completely write off this restaurant, as I've heard great things from other diners, I'll just order with more discretion and stick to my favorite dishes.

    (3)
  • Meredith R.

Lunch buffet has a wide selection and is pretty good. (I've been to India, fwiw.) No paneer, though. Lots of vegetarian dishes and a few different kinds of rice and chutney sauces. I haven't tried other Indian places in SLC for comparison. That said, this one comes across as solid but not outstanding for a tasty lunch. Try the chile pakoras!

    (3)
  • Grace S.

Tried their lunch buffet for the first time today. LOVED IT! You can try 5 different curries for about $10/person. My favorites were the goat curry and butter chicken. Their chickpea salad, spinach (saag) and lentil (daal) dishes are also awesome. Even for dinner, this place is a good deal. I like it that their entrees include rice and naan so for $30 including tax and tip, two people can eat a big meal. Staff said their meats (goat, lamb, chicken) are halal, which is important for Muslims but also ensures high quality, in my opinion. I think Kathmandu serves the best Indian food in SLC and as an added bonus, they are open on Sunday nights.

  • Austin B.

I was in the mood for Indian buffet, and chose this place based on all the reviews. So refreshing when something lives up to the hype, and this totally did. The curry was my favorite, but everything was delicious, best Indian buffet I've ever had.

  • Leah S.

As good as it gets for Salt Lake Indian/Nepali food. I always seem to get chicken tikka and garlic naan. Better than Star of india (their sauce was really watery) I haven't gotten anything I haven't like here.

  • Todd D.

Huge selection, everything is decent, nothing is terrific, ate way too much and am pretty sure I'm dying of curry poisoning.

    (3)
  • Paul M.

The Methi shrimp curry was delightful. Paired with a Taj Mahal lager, it made for a fine and satisfying meal. I highly recommend this restaurant. I plan to come back to sample the rest of their menu.

We have been coming to Kathmandu since moving to SLC a couple of years ago. Recently though there has been a definite change, and not for the better. Not only has their pricing increased, but their food quality seems to be going downhill. Tonight we ordered our usual - butter chicken, prawn coconut korma, and veggie samosa. The naan and samosas were not fresh and the portion size was noticeably smaller. Unfortunately this is the second time that we have noticed the decline in food quality and portion size. Don't think we will be back - used to be a solid 4 star spot - three stars instead of two because I hope these guys can get back to serving the fantastic, fresh food we love.

  • Bibhisha U.

The food is great here and the staff is amazing!! Don't forget to try the methi chicken and chilli chicken... They are to die for!! I'm always late and usually get to the restaurant 15 minutes prior to their closing time but the staff is always courteous and very hospitable!! Definitely the best place to try Nepali/Indian cuisine in SLC.. I highly recommend it!

  • Linda K.

Love this place! My husband and I have been here many times and have never experienced anything less than perfect. Despite the occasional language barrier with staff, they are incredibly friendly and helpful. Service has always been great. Love the naan and samosas to start. We love lamb and frequently order lamb tikka masala and the Everest lamb. The meat has always been deliciously tender in our dishes. Meals can also be made to accommodate spice levels that suit you. I love that you can order the highest spice level and still taste the other great flavors rather than just overwhelming hot spice.

I really love this buffet and the ability to try so many different dishes at once. My favorite is the butter chicken by far. I love the fried puffy naan here a lot too, I believe it's from Nepal.

  • Leslie K.

Great variety in the lunch buffet: 4 types of rice (my fave was mango), 4 vegetarian curries plus multiple other veggie dishes, naan and fried bread, and 3 desserts (including delicious gulab Jamun). Friendly service, frequent water refills (they left a pitcher for us) and good price. Wish we had this place in NYC! Liked how they marked dishes that were vegan or "very hot."

My co-workers and I went here for a birthday lunch and everything was good. Everyone just tried the lunch buffet which is $10. It's a great way for someone who's new to this type of food to try a variety of things and then see what they like. I couldn't tell you the names of most anything I ate but overall I enjoyed it. I liked that there was a good variety of vegetarian dishes along with things like the butter chicken. They had a couple different types of rice and two different breads. They had those little doughnut like things that are covered in that sweet syrup and they were just ok. I have had them at another place in Vegas and liked those better. These were just ok. Not sure I'd get them again unless I wasn't on a diet. HA! Overall the service was fine and the place was clean. The buffet was clean and everything looked pretty good. They do have a salad that is mostly iceberg lettuce so I didn't even waste my time on it. I'd definitely go back and give it a try again since I do like this type of food. I have had better buffets like this for the same price in Vegas but hey, this isn't Vegas. I would be interested to see if the buffet options change when you go in. I love paner and didn't see that on the buffet the day we went. If they had a different variety of options I'd give it another star.

  • Casey K.

Delicious lunch buffett! The yellow (mango-ish) rice is my favorite. The price is great, and I am pretty sure their tasty "spicy tea" is free. I sat here for 3 hours studying while I ate, and the staff was still exceptionally nice and attentive. Great place! Not to mention, you're right next door to Sprouts :)

Great Food and Excellent Service! Glasses were never empty and servers showed some great deal of hospitality. I should say its the best indian food and buffet selections one could get around Salt Lake City in such affordable price. Loved Methi Chicken and Everest Chicken and definitely gonna come back for more...

This place is amazing. So many options and it's vegan friendly. The vegetable momo's are a must, but, if you have the chance to go for lunch, do it, their lunch buffet is beyond fantastic. The food is full of flavor, it's fresh and it's the staff is stellar. If you like Indian and Nepali food, this place is a must.

  • Dan T.

For Salt Lake area, for Indian grub, you gotta try this place. Mountain of veggie options, great lamb, goat, chicken etc. I love (love, love) the samosa chat (sp) appetizer. No thing like the deep fried name-sake. Fresh, health, and vegetarian. If your into indian, give this a try and try something different.

The vegetarian options are plentiful, and allotted their own menu page. Hooray convenience! The food is yummy, and the prices reasonable. The service has been good, though nothing particularly noteworthy. I like the slideshow of photos from Nepal and India. The noise level feels a bit like a library. I think they could be more generous with naan portions. Though, the portions of everything else are quite large. One entree is enough to share with food left over. This is where I go when I cannot afford Bombay House.

Oh, I knew I'd be eating well when I smelled the pungent scent of authentic spices wafting through the door! Whenever I go to "Indian" restaurants that also serve Nepali, Tibetan, or Bangladeshi food, I make sure to order just that. So I ordered vegan/ vegetarian Thukpa, a spicy (or mild) Tibetan noodle soup. It was loaded with ginger and garlic; broccoli, cabbage, chili peppers and tomatoes floated in a cilantro and cumin- flavored broth. There was very little oil in the soup, so it was filling but not heavy. I've been to the Himalayas (in India,) where I had this soup several times. Each time it was a bit different-- sometimes bland, and sometimes spicy. The version here is as good as any I had in the Himalayas. Only the noodles are "American, " but hey, they work just fine. The servers are very friendly and helpful, especially the nice Tibetan girl who works there. I wish they'd open up a restaurant like this in SF, SLO, or LA. Otherwise I'll have to google "Thukpa " and try to make it myself. But I'm sure mine won't taste as good.

Kathmandu is a well-kept downtown secret! This Nepali & Indian food restaurant may look non-descript on the outside, but inside you'll find a beautifully decorated atmosphere with excellent food & attentive service. We started with lamb samosas and then shared chicken saag & chicken vindaloo, followed by a mango milkshake for dessert. It was as delicious as it was affordable.

I was reluctantly dragged here by friends. I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the spicy potato pickle salad, the butter chicken, and the spicy noodles. I'd definitely go back. Once inside it's easy to forget you're in the parking lot of Rite Aid.

I stopped by here to get food to go and check it out, hoping it would be a good experience. While waiting, I looked over the menu and picked out what my future order would be. I got back to the office and discovered they didn't put in the naan or any kind of utensils to eat with. The food is good but without the naan, its just simply that......good not great. I always tip to make sure I'm taken care of and this time it backfired. They took the tip and did nothing to make sure that I'd be coming back. Because of that, I'd likely won't be going back.

Fantastic. Friendly staff that all work together. Love their food and buffet. Price is a little high but you do get what you pay for. Never a bad experience eaten here nearly 10 times. My girlfriend and I love to get vege korma, and lamb vindaloo and share. Little bit of cream veggie goodness, little bit of spicy lamb to go with. Cheers!

This is our favorite Indian restaurant. They are known for the lunch buffet; which is fantastic. But dinner is the best treat. Try the samosa chat(sp) as the appetizer. All the portions are more than a serving- at least one more meal. My favorite is the baigan bartha.(sp). Great service.

I love this place!! One of my favorite Indian restaurants in town! The Kathmandu has plenty of vegetarian options for a great price, and everything is flavorful and delicious. The last time I was there was for the lunch buffet. We got there early (~11:45) and it was pretty empty. By the time we left, though, it was completely filled up. I love how their buffet has a wide variety of vegetarian options--not just your standard saag paneer and chana masala. They had a half dozen meatless options, and I noticed some that were completely vegan as well. I tried them all, but the coconut curry was the best. (Naturally, I didn't try the meat but I noticed a couple of chicken dishes...?). We just ordered water this time, but their specialty drinks are amazing as well. Service was quite attentive for a buffet, haha. Never had a glass more than half empty and as soon as my plate was clean it was whisked away. I have eaten dinner there once, a while ago, and I don't remember what I got but it was great--will write another review when I eat there again! I do know that rice AND naan come with dinner entrees, which is rare in this state. The price just cannot be beat, the food is AMAZING, and the whole staff is very friendly.

The food was so so. I've had better food at their other location. The methi chicken was not great this time around. The lamb curry was so so. Wouldn't be my first choice for Indian food.

bad bad bad bad service.. 1) i went at lunch time.. there were no tandori at lunch time!! and he told me it will take 20 min 2) the person there (he was around 40 years old) was very very very rude in the way he was talking to me, no idea why!!! very very very very rude! and it was twice that he was very very rude!!! 3)they never refile our drinks i will never go back again!! if there is less than one star i would have put that!

Excellent food with a lot of choices for both vegetarians and meat eaters. The staff is helpful with suggestions for balancing the choices when ordering for sharing. The cost is in line with most Indian restaurants I have visited. The one place I might fault them is that the naan is a little heavy, but still good. I have eaten here several times and the quality has been consistently good. Excellent vegetable coconut kurma.

Excellent Indian food. The location is a bit hard to find if you're from out of town. We had CTM and Butter chicken. Both were excellent. My mealmate had never had Indian food prior and almost gagged when I suggested this type of dinner. Afterward, he was a FAN.

Delicious, satisfying food. The ingredients were very fresh and we enjoyed everything. The only reason I gave four stars is because service is a bit slow. The wait, however is totally worth it.

This place was great! Yes it's in a strip mall but aren't all the best Indian Restaurants in strip malls? The Korma was divine. My husband doesn't like lamb so he got the chicken curry and it was great too! The only downfall is no full bar but that's Utah for you.

Great little indian restaurant. I would highly recommend it however, the waitstaff was a little distracted and seemed like we where bothering them at 3PM in the afternoon. They were friendly however, and attentive when they were available.

We've been to Kathmandu downtown couple times already. Their service and food were consistently good. I prefer their lunch buffet over the regular menu; however, if I bring family/friends who are vegetarians, their regular menu works very well since they offer many vegetarian dishes.

Wow! The tandoori chicken is scrumptious. The prawn coconut kurma is delicious. The $10 lunch buffet is a fantastic bargain and the take out portions are giant; two can eat for $20 with the tandoori chicken and samosa chaat. The service is friendly and capable and the food is cooked exactly as ordered. For example, I've been served "mild" at other Indian restaurants even though I ask for "as spicy as possible". Kathmandu offers great service, delicious food, reasonable prices, and a very pleasant atmosphere.

  • Joey P.

I've only had Indian food 4 times prior to today and I think this was the best I've had. Kathmandu 2 had a huge selection on their lunch buffet. Probably about 30% larger than Himalayan Kitchen's selection. They had all the usual favorites, plus 3 kinds of rice, 2 types of pudding, 3 salads, and 5 sauces. Their butter chicken was the best I've had. Their sweet cheese ball things (don't know the official name for these...) were fantastic. Actually, just about everything I tried (and I tried pretty much everything) was very good and very fresh tasting.

  • Balaji P.

Totally junk. Ordered chicken Biryani and Biryani rice itself was stale, Chicken was not soft at all. Ordered Butter chicken and chef doesn't even know the difference between butter chicken and chicken tikka, he brought chicken tikka and says it is butter chicken. In the end they fool the customers, prices are very high, even for free it is junk because it is stale food.

Wonderful food. I love the buffet format because I'm not super well versed in ethnic food and always worry that I'm ordering the wrong thing. This way I got to try a little if everything and had a chance to double back for the good stuff witch was plentiful. I never would have seen the place from the street as its tucked back in the parking lot. I tried the Japanese resturanut that it replaced and it this is a big improvement. Unfortunately I don't know that people know its there so I hope they can stay I'm business cause they are great. I did not realize that soft drinks were included untill after my meal.

There is nothing bad about this place. Price, food, service, portions are all good! It just didn't stand out to me more than other Indian restaurants, such as Ali Baba or Star of India but I wanted to say its good and if youre in the area, try it :)

I love Kathmandu2. Lunch buffet or dinner, it is always enjoyable. Dining room is lovely and comfortable. Sometimes the servers are less than helpful, possibly from a language barrier, but the manager/owner is gracious, explains the dishes and makes good suggestions. They have great vegetarian options (even on lunch buffet) and I especially love the Veggie Momos, Samosa Chat and Rayo Ko Saag (mustard greens). Partner loves the CTM and garlic naan. It gets a bit pricey but we always have 1-2 meals to take home after eating here, so I would take that into account.

Never had a bad dish here, amazing food for a decent price. The lunch buffet kicks ass!! I like it way better than star of India's buffet. Service is good, but can be slow at times. Ambience fits the restaurant, love the traditional garb. Definately in my top 2 Indian restaurants in slc.

I recently came across Indian food and I love it! What I don't like about it, is that it's terribly expensive. So expensive sometimes that I don't wanna risk trying a new dish because of the price. To fix said ailment Kathmandu2 was opened! Hooray They have a great Lunch buffet that runs for about 10 dollars. They had assorted Curries and Kormas as well as unlimited Naan bread!!! I loved their Tandoori chicken, It wasn't dry like usual tandoori's I've had in the past. The flavors were remarkable and the service was exceptional!.

We've tried a dozen Indian restaurants in Salt Lake and this one is the best. Their food is authentic and flavorful. Plenty of vegetarian options. The service is excellent. Little perk: they give you complimentary Naan. Usually you pay extra for Naan at local restaurants. Everything that I've tasted at Kathmandu was great and I never left the place feeling unsatisfied. Definitely recommend it for Indian-food lovers.

I ordered take out from this location: Bread Basket, Kathmandu Combo, and Coconut Currey Chicken. Each bite was better than the last, especially the Combo appetizer. There were several moan-inducing flavor moments. Hands down the best Indian I've had in Salt Lake. Also the best naan I've had in recent memory. Even the bell peppers in the appetizer were awe-inspiring.

This place is the real deal. I have lived in and traveled around India and Nepal extensively, and I pride myself on having tried everything strange and delicious in those countries. The service isn't fantastic, but if you love this sort of food, you won't care. I was pleasantly surprised to see momos on the menu. The wrapper is spot on, exactly as a momo wrapper ought to taste. The inside is a little too solid in my opinion, but the flavor is wonderful and juicy. My one serious gripe, however, is that the butter chicken is overcomplicated in its flavor. The dish doesn't taste bad, but butter chicken should be rich, simple, and comforting. Still, this place deserves some more customers. Shabash!

In a word, awesome. A definite must try. Things can come spicy so if that's not your thing, be sure and tell them so you get mild. Everything they make is tasty so this is the right menu to venture out and try something new. We almost didn't order a fish dish because the waitress couldn't tell us what kind of fish was in it. We decided to order it anyway and that turned out to be a good decision. A white fish I still cant name but tasty all the same.

A wonderful, diverse lunch buffet that is a cut above other similar offerings from Indian restaurants. Well prepared, fresh ingredients... And many, many choices. Works for the vegan as well as the carnivore. While the buffet leaves you to go at your own pace, the supporting service is good and attentive. Very reasonably priced.

Great new gem in downtown SLC. Same owner and quality as Himalayan kitchen, but less expensive. Service is good and the chicken tikka masala I have ordered both visits was excellent.

  • Amy W.

I LOVE The Kathmandu! Their Mattar Mushroom is among the best and their naan is always perfectly pillowy! The buffet is awesome, always stocked, always fresh. It's fine to get takeout here, but I much prefer the lunch buffet so I can get a little of everything. It is great for vegetarians and vegans and you'll feel equally as comfortable eating with your hands as you will with a fork. The only thing I don't like about it is that I always end up with leftovers and then have to stare at this delicious food just praying I'll get hungry again soon!

    (5)
  • Aditi H.

Not the best indian food but they do have good dishes but never consistent with taste. We asked for spicy food and could barely eat it because it was filled with chillies and had no taste/ flavor at all. The buffet is less than impressive and I prefer some other indian restaurants in the area for a weekday buffet lunch.

Now I know that Tuesdays are lamb day. Food was hot fresh and delicious. Service spot on. Great place for buffet loved the variety and large selection. The best time to go is when they are busy as they crank out the hot fresh food as quick as it gets eaten. Can't wait to go back when down town.

It's been a couple years now. I think I was probably harsh in my earlier review. They put on a good lunch buffet, consistently good food. Servers are nice. If you work downtown, it's a bit of a trip, but plenty of parking.

Great food! Good menu! We are the fenugreek chicken and prawn tikka masala. All plates come with rice and naan so that was great. Although the food was excellent I thought the service was a little slow. We spent a whole hour there- which is long considering we ordered in the first 5 minutes!

  • Donald P.

I think this was my first time trying Nepali food and I was not disappointed. Perhaps not as spicy (with regard to flavor) than Indi or Paki food but still very good. The food was served family style - so only one dish for rice and naan. It honestly didn't look very filling but we left rather full. Jwanu Curry Chicken was good. I asked for mild and I don't know if my dish was spicy hot or the result of tasting the food the other guys had ordered, but I was sweating like I had just stepped out of the shower. Service could have been a little more attentive but over all not bad. The guy was very helpful in helping us select our food.

This place is awesome for a lunch buffet. You get all the great dishes you would expect such as tandoori chicken, naan, saag, butter chicken, rice pudding etc. You will not be disappointed if you come here. If you can't make it in for lunch, I would recommend any lamb dish they offer; you cannot go wrong with that!

Awesome place! Go for the buffet and don't miss the dessert rice pudding. I am not a fan of trying dessert but its good. Enough sweet and great texture. Food is great try as much as you can. Stay away from the jalapenos if you are not into really hot food. The service is good but beware it gets crowded at lunch time!

This is the first time I've been here. When I first got through the first door, there were two more doors inside, one on the right, the other on the left. My friend and I stood there for like 30 sec to decide which to open lol. At last we have decided to pick the left one, and btw it is the correct one. This is an interesting dinning experience I've never had before. I've heard a lot of it's lunch buffet, however, I went at night that day, so we missed the chance to try out their buffet. But we will definitely come back and try that out. We ordered butter chicken and lamb curry. They both taste good. They were different from those I've tried before. The taste of Kathmandu is not as strong as the others. This is exactly the reason I like this restaurant better than most of the rest. The sauce of Indian food is sometimes too much and too strong for me, but this restaurant has no problem of this.

A girls only family date, and another great experience here! I was surprised to see the buffet open on a Saturday, and will have to try it one of these days. Yummy mango lassis! The manager even brought us desserts for all for of us, on the house! That was very kind. We will keep coming back!

  • D W.

First let me say I hate buffets because of the overall quality of what is served. Usually all filling carbs or food that is tasteless. Since this was our first visit we didn't know it was buffet only at lunch. What a great surprise, The food was excellent! The price was very reasonable especially when you consider the variety and quality of what was available. The dishes each had individual distinct flavors and textures. I loved the level of heat, not too much even those dishes that were rated hot. Signage on each dish with ingredients listed was helpful and good for the novice. We will be back for sure, it was a real treat.

I've been here 3 times and gave this place 4 stars. I am not coming back now. Do not order chicken tikka masala here and don't go there after the lunch buffet. My chicken tikka masala was not chicken tikka. There were no trace of tomato. It was inedible because it was extremely salty. I made sure I was not exaggerating by having my friend taste it. He agreed. Then I took it home to my Pakistani roommate to taste it and she asked me to not try to eat that and to throw it away. I threw it away, a $15 dollars curry. I think they gave me whatever curry was left from buffet and fixed it up again and that's probably why its salty from having been dried and reheated. That would've explain the saltiness and chunky dry consistency. It was definitely not chicken tikka masala from the taste of the spices. Salty would've been forgivable but the dish wasn't even chicken tikka masala . I kind of I expect to get the dish I ordered. I don't know how they think they could get away with it. Maybe I looked naive as if I've never had curry before or something. I would have said something about the food but the waiter never came by the table again after setting down the food. Even if I did say something it didn't seem like they would do anything to help. I left disappointed and unsatisfied, not to mention still hungry because I didn't eat it. :( Im not in the business of saying bad things about any business especially when I used to like it. the experience took away my loyalty to the place. I think I give up on Indian food in Utah. Never leaving Bombay house again for chicken tikka masala

I'll preface the review by saying I eat a LOT of Indian food, been eating it all my life. Stopped by Kathmandu while travelling cross country and it definitely deserves its high rating, good food, good service. Huge lunch buffet, notably more dishes available than a lot of other Indian buffets I've had. The buffet covered all your basics, it had saag (spinach), aloo (potato), butter chicken, and chicken tandoori. It also had a vegetarian korma, a chow-mein-esque noodle dish (clearly Nepalese), and one or two other dishes deriving from Nepal. For me, the vegetarian korma and the butter chicken were best. The korma was delicious with just enough cashew nut flavor and a bunch of vegetables which were delicious over rice. The butter chicken was actually one of the best I've had simply because it wasn't loaded with oil. not sure if they actually took the time to dump the oil out or if they prepared it slightly differently, but the sauce was slightly thicker while maintaining that same great flavor. Loved it. Can't give it 5 stars though because we walked in at 215 and asked for the buffet they said no problem and then started cleaning up the buffet at 230 with no warning so we didn't have a chance to go back for seconds. But I'd definitely return.

Simply wonderful. The chili shrimp are fantastic. Very fresh vegetables with pieces of succulent shrimp in a delicate sauce. I had medium spice. Just the right heat.

Delicious, huge amount of food for the price, we will DEFINITELY BE BACK FOR THE LUNCH BUFFET, but wearing our Thanksgiving pants! We ordered: Bread basket (assortment of naan and dipping sauces) Combo plate (listed on the appetizer list, but my boyfriend had it as a meal) and Nepalese Garlic Curry chicken. Everything we had was great!
